Acute and chronic sinusitis
Understanding Acute and Chronic Sinusitis
This is an inflammatory disorder affecting the paranasal sinuses, typically triggered by bacterial, viral, or fungal pathogens. While it may develop across all age groups, it is most prevalent in pediatric and adult patients.

Classification of Sinusitis by Duration
Sinusitis is classified according to symptom duration: episodes resolving within 4 weeks are designated as acute sinusitis; cases persisting between 4 and 12 weeks are categorized as subacute; and conditions extending beyond 12 weeks are defined as chronic sinusitis.
What causes acute and chronic sinusitis?
Contributing factors include upper respiratory infections, allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps, sinonasal neoplasms, nasal trauma, or the overuse of topical decongestants. Clinical manifestations may include rhinorrhea, headache, facial pain or pressure, sneezing, pyrexia, cough, dyspnea, and olfactory dysfunction, such as hyposmia or anosmia.

Treatment Protocols for Acute and Chronic Sinusitis
- An appropriate therapeutic regimen is established based on the underlying etiology and the severity of the pathology.
- Therapeutic modalities may include: oral antibiotics, analgesics, anti-inflammatory medications, nasal sprays, or saline nasal irrigation.
- Should the condition fail to respond to pharmacotherapy, surgical intervention may be required to clear and aerate the paranasal sinuses. If not treated promptly and accurately, sinusitis can result in severe complications such as otitis media, mastoiditis, encephalitis, meningitis, visual impairment, or irreversible blindness.
How can sinusitis be prevented?
Maintaining clear, healthy nasal passages is essential: ensure adequate hydration, minimize exposure to allergens and airborne irritants, avoid tobacco use and passive smoking, and perform daily saline nasal irrigations. Additionally, reinforcing systemic immunity through balanced nutrition, consistent physical exercise, and restorative sleep is strongly advised.
